Li Zhensheng (b. 1931) initiated wide-hybridization between common wheat and Thinopyrum ponticum and was also the originator of wheat-chromosome engineering in China. Several cultivars bred from the offspring of his distant hybridization have significantly improved wheat productivity in China.
