Named in honor of Glenn J. Veeder, planetary astronomer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Veeder was chiefly responsible for the initiation of minor planet observations through the J, H and K bandpasses. This work resulted in the identification of new minor planet types and led to a new classification scheme. Veeder is also noted for his work on minor planet radiometry for the determination of diameters and albedos, particularly among the Earth-crossers, and he was in charge of the scientific analysis of the characteristics of the IRAS {see planet  (3728)} Asteroid and Comet Survey.
