Named for one of the most prestigious private universities in Japan. It was established in 1882 by Shigenobu Okuma, who later became the eighth and the seventeenth prime minister of Japan. One of the primary objectives of the university was to promote the independence of study and spirit of progress known as Waseda Spirits. Both discoverers of this minor planet graduated from Waseda.
