Named in honor of Stephen P. Synnott (1946– ), a space scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Synnott is a noted authority on spacecraft optical navigation techniques. He discovered the Jovian satellites Thebe and Metis and was a member of the Voyager 2 imaging team, which discovered the small Uranian and Neptunian satellites. (M 27461) _ _.
